You really should make a Will …
Posted by Justin on Dec 16, 2011 in Nelsons' Column | 0 commentsFar too many people don’t make a Will, assuming that their next of kin will inherit their estate automatically. That is not necessarily the case- if, for instance a man dies leaving a wife and two children, his widow will be serverly restricted in her entitlement in order to protect the interests of the children, sometimes with near-disastrous results.
Also, if husband and wife with no children die at the same time – in a car crash, for instance – without either leaving a Will, the law assumes the older (eg: the husband) died first, so all the estate would go to the wife and, as a result of her death, to her next of kin (her parents?) leaving nothing for the husband’s side of the family.
Don’t make your estate planning into a lottery – make a Will!
